The Friends of Margaret Junior School Uganda

Many of the children attending Margaret Junior School in Uganda are orphans. They may have lost one or both parents through illness, in most cases as a result of HIV/AIDs. Of these some may be being brought up by members of the extended family or by grandparents. Some families will be headed by the oldest child – who themselves may be students at the school. For these children and their guardians it is a struggle to find the funding to attend school, to meet the costs of books and uniforms.
The cost of educating a child at the school is approximately £120 per year, which is less than 33p per day! In Uganda, primary education extends over 7 years so the full cost of seeing a child through to secondary level amounts to £840.
We also recognize the need to help those leaving primary school to access secondary education if their grades are sufficient and for some to go on to Further Education. Currently the cost of secondary schooling is approximately £600 per year for 4-6 years and University approximately £2000 per year for 3-4 years.
These costs are higher as pupils have to board in addition to the fees and learning materials.

WE NEED YOUR HELP

Primary Sponsorship

In 2021 we moved from individual sponsorship to general sponsorship across all pupils at the school who need it to ensure that no child is denied education because their family is unable to afford the schools modest fees.
For a minimum of £10 per month you can assist with the education of children at the school.
You will receive photographs and reports of children’s progress and class activities.

Secondary and Further Education Sponsorship

In 2021 a Bursary scheme was established by the school’s Executive Committee. Successful applications will be based on family background, disability, need and educational ability.
Children will be selected by the School Board which includes Head Teacher, Chair of Executive Committee, Chair of the PTA and School Director.
The number of places will depend upon available funds.
For £50 a month, which you could share with a family member or friend, you can contribute to the Bursary scheme and assist in the education of children to a higher level.
